Cemetery Preservation

RGA provides a broad range of cemetery preservation services to individuals, families, churches, and municipalities for cemeteries of all sizes. Our qualified staff takes a “hands-on” approach to all of our cemetery projects and helps clients determine their needs. RGA understands the pressing needs of cemeteries that have been abandoned, vandalized, and undocumented, as well as the negative effects of inappropriate conservation techniques and materials. Our professionally trained staff delivers cemetery preservation presentations in a classroom setting; leads workshops in the field that cover the basics of cleaning and resetting gravestones; conducts historical research; develops cemetery tours for fundraising efforts; produces cemetery brochures; and, develops outdoor interpretive signage for heritage tourism. We document cemeteries through photographic inventories and transcriptions of gravestones’ attributes and build searchable interactive websites that feature photographs of gravestones, transcriptions, and photographs and biographical information on those buried in the cemetery.

RGA offers remote sensing or geophysical survey techniques that complement our expertise in cemetery preservation and documentation services. Geophysical survey, such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), is a non-invasive and cost-effective way to survey cemeteries for unmarked graves and structural remains. Ground penetrating radar enables the identification of possible burials and preparation of plan maps showing their location relative to known grave markers and other cemetery landmarks. Locating sensitive cultural resources allows our clients to make effective decisions regarding preservation or avoidance. RGA’s archaeological staff has experience performing GPR surveys at Greenwood Cemetery in New Bern, North Carolina and several locations at the Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site in Town Creek, North Carolina.

RGA is a member of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) and subscribes to their standards of practice and code of ethics.
